Preventing Mold & Mildew in the Bathroom

How to Prevent Mold & Mildew Growth in Your Bathroom

Pristine bathtub free of mold or mildew. Are you bothered by the mildew growing in the grout around your shower? Maybe your bathtub’s drain is discolored due to mold growth. Unfortunately, no matter how much you clean your bathroom, mold and mildew love the hot and humid environment. This makes it difficult to get rid of these pesky issues permanently. But there are certainly steps you can take to help keep your bathroom clean and mold- and mildew-free. Here are a few ways you can prevent mold and mildew growth in your bathroom:

1.     Crack open a window or install an exhaust fan.

Since mold and mildew love to grow in humid environments, increasing the ventilation in your bathroom will help keep air circulating and prevent the room from getting too moist. This tip rings true even if you aren’t actively using the shower or the bathtub, because your bathroom is chock-full of water-using appliances.

2.     Don’t let water sit in your sinks, showers, or bathtubs.

As soon as you’re done washing your hands or taking a bath, make sure to get rid of as much excess water as possible. Standing water is a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Squeegee the water in your bathtub or shower and quickly wipe down your sink after use.

3.     Frequently wash your towels.

Once you finish drying off after your bath, do you tend to hang your towel on a hook and go on with your day? This could be contributing to the mold and mildew growth in your bathroom. Damp towels and other linens, such as shower curtains, drapes, and rugs, promote the perfect environment for fungus to grow.

4.     Fix any leaks.

If you notice that the floor surrounding your shower or bathtub is wet every time you bathe, you may have a leak that needs fixing. Leaks can cause moisture to accumulate, which will allow mold to grow. Whenever you notice water pooling on your bathroom floor, immediately dry it up and fix the leak as soon as possible.

5.     Reseal your grout.

Sealing your grout is not a one-and-done sort of deal—in fact, if you look closely at your grout, you may notice hairline cracks. These gaps create an entryway for moisture to seep into, which results in mold and mildew growth. Consider resealing your grout once a year to prevent this from occurring.

6.     Invest in a new bathing solution that is resistant to mold and mildew growth.

If all else fails, or if you are unable to keep up with regular bathroom maintenance, the next best step is to invest in a new bathtub or shower that will resist the growth of mildew and mold.
